Urban pluvial flooding has the potential to cause significant damage and disruption in highly urbanised areas. In order to reliably model urban pluvial flooding, it is necessary to realistically represent the urban fabric in its complexity, taking into account the local topography and the interactions between the overland and sewer networks, as well as the boundary conditions that determine the performance of the system. This talk will present dual drainage modelling and some applications, such as urban flood forecasting, dual drainage with SWMM, flood risk maps and customisation of SWMM.
Dr. Simões is an Assistant Professor at University of Coimbra, Portugal. He holds a graduation in Civil Engineering and an MSc in hydraulics from University of Coimbra, and a PhD from Imperial College with a thesis entitled “Urban Pluvial Flood Forecasting”. The main focus of his work is the hydraulic modelling of urban floods, flood forecasting and flood risk management. He has co-authored several conference and journal papers and he was the 2011 Winner of “Poul Harremous Award” at 12th International Conference on Urban Drainage (ICUD) and the 2014 Portuguese Water Resources Association Award.
